"From Police Badge to Fly Rod: Jay Engel’s Journey to Mastering the Art of Fly Casting"

After two decades in law enforcement, Jay Engel transformed his lifelong passion for fly fishing into a mission to share the craft with others. A dedicated angler since childhood, Jay recently delved into fly casting—a precision technique that uses the weight of the line to propel flies across distances. Drawing from his rowing experience, he compares the finesse of fly casting to the discipline of rowing, emphasizing its status as a standalone sport within fly fishing.

In pursuit of excellence, Jay trained under world-renowned caster Macauley Lord, completing L.L.Bean’s Fly Fishers International Casting Instructor Preparation Course in 2019. Now on the path to earning his Fly Fishers International Casting Instructor (CI) certification, he blends expertise with a passion for teaching.

Launched in November 2019, Saw Mill Fly Cast is Jay’s way of introducing beginners to the lifelong sport of fly casting. With just a few lessons, he believes anyone can carry their skills to rivers and streams across the globe. Deeply committed to inclusivity, Jay champions adaptive fly fishing for individuals with disabilities, first responders, and veterans coping with PTSD—inspired by his own background and the healing power of the sport.

"Chappie Chapman: New Zealand’s Fly Fishing Legend – From Mountain Streams to Global Expertise"

Chappie Chapman stands as one of New Zealand’s most revered fly fishing guides, a title earned through decades of dedication to the craft. His love for fishing ignited at age six, but it was at thirteen that he discovered the magic of fly-fishing in the pristine mountain valleys of his youth—home to over 300 trout-rich streams.

Cutting his teeth on small, challenging waterways, Chappie developed a signature dry-fly technique that remains his passion today. In a bold 1970s adventure, he sold everything, traded routine for freedom, and embarked on a 3.5-year odyssey across New Zealand’s waters—proving that mastery demands relentless pursuit.
