After two decades in law enforcement, Jay Engel transformed his lifelong passion for fly fishing into a mission to share the craft with others. A dedicated angler since childhood, Jay recently delved into fly casting—a precision technique that uses the weight of the line to propel flies across distances. Drawing from his rowing experience, he compares the finesse of fly casting to the discipline of rowing, emphasizing its status as a standalone sport within fly fishing.
In pursuit of excellence, Jay trained under world-renowned caster Macauley Lord, completing L.L.Bean’s Fly Fishers International Casting Instructor Preparation Course in 2019. Now on the path to earning his Fly Fishers International Casting Instructor (CI) certification, he blends expertise with a passion for teaching.
Launched in November 2019, Saw Mill Fly Cast is Jay’s way of introducing beginners to the lifelong sport of fly casting. With just a few lessons, he believes anyone can carry their skills to rivers and streams across the globe. Deeply committed to inclusivity, Jay champions adaptive fly fishing for individuals with disabilities, first responders, and veterans coping with PTSD—inspired by his own background and the healing power of the sport.
